Ingrown Toenails

Painful ingrown toenails are often caused by errors in trimming that cause a section of the toenail to protrude into the skin. Once the nail breaks the skin barrier, an infection often results, which makes treatment more complicated — and can even result in an amputation.

Pain will be the first sign of an ingrown toenail, followed by irritation, redness and swelling of the surrounding skin. Eventually, you may notice yellow to green pus in the area or on your sock. If this occurs, it is important to seek immediate medical attention. Especially if you have diabetes or other medical conditions more susceptible to infection.

What You Can Do

Proper care and cutting your toenails straight across are the best ways to reduce the likelihood of ingrown nails. Properly fitting shoes, possibly with an insert to alter how you push off when walking, may also reduce the chances of this deformity.

If you need to be shown how to properly trim your toenails, visit a podiatrist.
