Become a Certified Fitter of Therapeutic Shoes!

Dr. Comfort’s new Certified Fitter of Therapeutic Shoes education and training course has now been approved by the National Commission on Orthotic & Prosthetic Education (NCOPE).  With this approval, Dr. Comfort’s new course now meets the prerequisite education requirement for individuals seeking to become a certified by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics & Pedorthics (ABC).

Course Details

As required by ABC and NCOPE, the course covers 16 total hours of material.  Dr. Comfort will be offering the course in two formats.  The primary format will be a two day live course, and the alternate will be a one day live/one day online course.  Both formats will contain extensive anatomy content and hands-on lab instruction – everything a professional needs to become a successful Certified Fitter of Therapeutic Shoes (CFts). 

Course content includes:

  •  Anatomy of the foot – basic anatomy of the foot and its relation to proper shoe fitting
  • Terminology – basic medical terminology for communication and documentation
  • Material Science – identification of common materials utilized in therapeutic footwear and foot orthoses
  • Patient Evaluation and Techniques – physical evaluation of the foot and identification of therapeutic shoe eligibility criteria
  • Common Foot Pathologies and Deformities – identification of common foot pathologies
  • Foot Measurement, Shoe Fitting and Selection Criteria – use of foot measurement tools and appropriate footwear selection for the diabetic foot
  • Complications Association with the Diabetic Foot – knowledge of signs, symptoms and risk factors associated with the diabetic foot
  • Documentation – knowledge of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) documentation requirements
  • Professional ethics – knowledge of professional responsibilities

Instructor

The course will be taught by Dr. Comfort’s Director of Education Brian Lane, C.Ped.   Lane joined Dr. Comfort in February 2009 after serving as the Director of Pedorthics for the Atlanta Foot & Ankle Clinic.  Brian also has years of experience as a 2nd grade teacher and is a veteran of the National Guard.

2 Day Live Course~$350 per person; after course completion participant will receive a $175 credit towards Dr. Comfort merchandise.
